Artist Susanne Gottberg

Born in Ekenäs, Finland 1964 | Lives and works in Helsinki, Finland.

Susanne Gottberg’s paintings explore spatiality as both a physical and experiential phenomenon. At their core is painting itself, composed of touch, materials, and accumulated gestures. Each work generates its own field, echoing and merging with the space surrounding the viewer. It asserts a strong presence while deepening the dimension it contains, sparking a dialogue between the image, its depicted interior, and its surroundings. The encounter unfolds on the picture plane: a surface suspended between inner and outer realms. Gottberg employs layered techniques in oil on canvas and pencil on wood, with the wood itself actively shaping both the artwork and the surrounding space.

Susanne Gottberg graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1989 and held her debut exhibition in Helsinki that same year. She received the Finnish Art Society’s Ducat Prize in 1991 and was elected Young Artists of the Year in 1994. Gottberg’s works can be found in a number of major Finnish public and private collections.

Galerie Forsblom has been representing Susanne Gottberg since 1989.
